ForeverLM vs RemNote
RemNote is an all-in-one student platform: notes that auto-generate flashcards, PDF annotation, exam schedulers, and a growing AI layer. It's arguably the most feature-complete study app for coursework. ForeverLM is narrower and more opinionated: track every source you consume, schedule it, and verify understanding through an AI review dialogue — with your data in your own iCloud and the AI you already pay for.
At a glance
| ForeverLM | RemNote | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free; MCP is 7 days free, then $19 once (no subscription); AI on your own OpenRouter key at cost | Free tier (capped); Pro $96/yr; Pro + AI $216/yr; $395 lifetime (AI still +$10/mo) |
| AI costs | Your own OpenRouter key, billed by OpenRouter at cost with nothing added, for any model in Chat (free models cost nothing); or an AI subscription you already pay for, over MCP | Metered AI credits included in tiers (1,000/mo on Pro, 20,000/mo on Pro + AI); no bring-your-own-key |
| Platforms | Native macOS app (macOS 14+) | Web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android |
| Data storage | Local SQLite + files in your private iCloud container | RemNote's cloud by default; local-only knowledge bases on desktop lose sync |
| Source ingestion | Automatic: articles, papers, podcasts, books, YouTube, X posts | PDFs, slides, lecture recordings, web clipper — no podcasts or YouTube |
| Review method | Review dialogue with an AI tutor | Spaced-repetition flashcards (SM-2/FSRS), AI-generated cards, AI quizzes and grading |
| Model choice | Any MCP-compatible AI (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok), or any model in-app through your own OpenRouter key | OpenAI/Anthropic/Google behind RemNote's credit system |
| Export | Files on your Mac; SQLite you can open | Markdown/JSON export; rich structure and scheduling history don't survive cleanly |

Pricing: subscription + credits vs a free app + your own AI key
Meaningful AI use on RemNote costs $216/yr (Pro + AI), and even the $395 lifetime license excludes AI credits — AI stays a $10/mo add-on forever. The credits are RemNote-denominated: you can't bring your own key or your existing ChatGPT/Claude subscription.
ForeverLM is free, and its AI takes two routes, mixable: any model in the in-app Chat, on your own OpenRouter key, billed by OpenRouter at its cost with nothing added (free models cost nothing); or drive ForeverLM over MCP from the Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok subscription you're already paying for. The inference is on that subscription, and MCP is the one paid part of ForeverLM: 7 days free, then $19 once. Per-conversation costs in the app are shown to the cent.
Three years of RemNote Pro + AI is ~$648 committed up front. ForeverLM's equivalent number is $0 for the app, or $19 once if you add MCP, plus whatever OpenRouter bills for the AI you chose to run. That is the honest answer, not a dodge: usage is the one line item you control directly.
Where RemNote is better
- Course-based studying. Annotating lecture slides and PDFs, auto-deriving flashcards from your note outline, exam schedulers that compress reviews before a test date — for a semester with exams, RemNote is purpose-built.
- Every platform. Web, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS. ForeverLM is Mac-only.
- Integrated notes. RemNote is a real outliner/note-taking app; ForeverLM deliberately isn't.
- Usable free tier. Unlimited notes, flashcards, and devices for $0 (with caps on PDFs and AI).
- Built-in flashcard scheduling. If you want classic spaced repetition with image occlusion and clozes, it's all there.
Where ForeverLM is better
- Explaining beats grading cards. RemNote's review is still fundamentally flashcards — even its AI grading scores your answer to a fixed card. ForeverLM's review is a conversation: you explain the source from scratch and the AI probes gaps it discovers along the way. See Why Quizzing?
- Your whole consumption stream, not just coursework. Podcasts with full transcripts, Safari reading list articles, books, papers, YouTube, X posts — auto-discovered, not manually uploaded. RemNote has no podcast or YouTube ingestion at all.
- Real money, not a private currency. RemNote credits are RemNote-denominated, refilled monthly, and spendable nowhere else. ForeverLM's in-app Chat runs on your own OpenRouter key, billed at what OpenRouter actually charges with nothing added, or on free models for nothing; or lean on a subscription you already have, over MCP. Any model, switch anytime, and the ledger is in dollars you can check.
- Data in your iCloud. RemNote's synced knowledge bases live on their servers (local-only mode exists but gives up sync). ForeverLM syncs through your own Apple account; the app's servers never store your library.
- Simpler by design. RemNote is famously dense — rems, portals, descriptors, templates. ForeverLM has one loop: track, schedule, read or listen, explain it back.
Which should you choose?
Choose RemNote if you're a student working through structured courses with exams, want notes + flashcards + PDF annotation in one place, or need Windows/Android.
Choose ForeverLM if you're on a Mac and your learning is source-driven — articles, papers, podcasts, books — and you'd rather own your data outright and pay for AI by the token you actually spent, instead of renting credits by the year.
